About

Root and Shoot is a design studio based in south east London, designing and making sustainable (truly low impact and wherever possible positive environmental benefit) commissions and self directed work in the areas of climate positive playgrounds, carpentry and play design workshops, treehouses, little free libraries, furniture, products, interiors, artworks and installations.

It was founded in 2015 by myself, Jeremy Wyatt, after a career in furniture making, psychology and design research in the technology sector. I deal with the big picture down to the tiny details, and both design and hand make all of the projects. I also have the privilege of knowing many incredible craftspeople, carpenters, metal fabricators, textile specialists, designers, engineers and artists, and I build the team based on the specific needs of each project.

Working in a wide range of materials, from re-loved salvaged material like rubber for our playgrounds, to wood, metal and fabric, I enjoy working at a variety of scales, from large international treehouse commissions, to local little free libraries and artworks. I love variety and no two projects are the same, though a wealth of learning and contacts enables me to deliver cost effective unique designs tailored to the needs and desires of the client.

Sustainability is at the heart of the practice, as I want to work in line with my values for people and planet. Involving the end user in the design is crucial to the long term success of projects, for example running truly collaborative co-design workshops at schools and seeking to understand the reasons and inspiration for each project to inform our thinking. Designed for functionality and ultimately for disassembly in the future, after a life of bringing joy, encouraging interaction, community building and empowerment inbetween.

We look forward to hearing from you.
